Community Board 9 to host meeting on Kingston-Brooklyn Aves. bike lanes
CROWN HEIGHTS – COMMUNITY BOARD 9 is set to hold an in-person meeting on the proposed construction of protected bike lanes on area streets next week, which will offer updates on the plans for the project as well as an opportunity for locals to ask questions and share concerns.
The DOT’s current plan, which is intended to curb speeding and drag racing, would add protected bike lanes on Kingston and Brooklyn avenues between Empire Boulevard and Winthrop Street and around the George C. Wingate campus, in addition to standard bike lanes along Rutland and Fenimore streets from the Wingate campus to Flatbush Avenue. Safety measures like speed bumps and pedestrian islands are also being considered.
The protected bike lane plan has generated controversy at previous meetings. Supporters agree with the DOT’s assessment that bike lanes are needed in the area and will protect schoolchildren from cars, while opponents have raised concerns that the space allotted to bike lanes will take away parking spaces and worsen congestion, as well as about the potential dangers of bikes to children.
The meeting will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 13 starting at 7 p.m. at the CB9 Board Office at 890 Nostrand Avenue.
