NYPD arrests accused high-end wig-snatcher
BOROUGH PARK — A WOMAN WAS recently arrested in a joint effort by the NYPD and the Boro Park Shomrim, the Orthodox Jewish neighborhood watch group, for allegedly stealing expensive wigs from a local apartment building, according to Yeshiva World News.
Residents who reported valuables disappearing from their apartments became suspicious of the woman, who works as a housekeeper, after seeing her entering and leaving the building outside of scheduled shifts. Shomrim volunteers were strategically placed outside the building and allegedly spotted her taking possessions when she was not working, leading to an arrest by police; Yeshiva World reports that the woman’s home was searched, and that numerous wigs and other valuables were recovered.
Many Orthodox Jewish women consider it to be a religious obligation to hide their hair after marriage; the high-end and bespoke wigs worn by women following this practice can cost thousands of dollars.
“In a successful collaborative operation, a home attendant was recently arrested by the NYPD after being caught in the act of stealing high-end wigs and personal items from a residential building,” wrote Shomrim on Nov. 5. “This arrest followed more than a month of reported thefts, during which residents became increasingly aware of valuable items going missing from their apartments.”
