Chu loses seat to Chan in win for Republicans

BENSONHURST – STATE SEN. IWEN Chu lost her southern Brooklyn 17th state Senate District seat to Republican challenger Steve Chan, reports City and State, delivering a concession speech on Tuesday night. Democrat Chu received 41% of the vote to Chan’s 51%, a surprisingly brutal margin in a district where registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans 3 to 1.

The 17th District race featured strong messaging about crime and safety; Chan, a former Marine and NYPD officer, highlighted opposition to a controversial Bensonhurst homeless shelter as part of his campaign.
