FDA announces voluntary recall of certain soft-ripened cheeses
NATIONWIDE — CERTAIN SOFT-RIPENED CHEESES WITH A LIMITED DISTRIBUTION have been recalled because of possible contamination with listeria, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration announced on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Savencia Cheese USA of New Holland, Pennsylvania, is recalling select soft ripened cheeses manufactured in its Lena manufacturing facility because it has the potential to be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infection. Only certain brands were affected, but New Yorkers who may have purchased them in local stores or during travel are urged to discard the product or bring it to a retailer for refund. The affected brands are listed on the FDA’s website.
Routine testing found that processing equipment at the site may have been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. While finished product testing has not identified any contaminated product, Savencia has initiated a voluntary recall to retrieve the potentially affected product. No illnesses had been reported as of press time on Tuesday.
