NEW YORK — Just a bit over two hours — incredible! Abdi Nageeye, of the Netherlands, crosses the finish line to win the men’s elite division of the New York City Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024, in New York. He crossed the line in 2:07.39 Nageeye sprinted ahead, finishing six seconds faster than the 2022 winner, Evans Chebet. Nageeye, who in 2021 won the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, on Sunday became the first runner from the Netherlands to win the men’s race. Competing in the women’s race, Sheila Chepkirui of Kenya won on her debut appearance at the  New York City Marathon with a finish line time of 2:24.35.

This annual ritual of runners and traffic detours, always held on the first Sunday in November (when Daylight Saving Time ends), has its starting point in Staten Island. The finish line is in Central Park.

MOLDOVA — Please vote (as soon as we get to you): A woman casts her vote in a mobile ballot box during a presidential election runoff in the village of Ciopleni, Moldova, Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024. The Associated Press reported on Monday afternoon, Nov. 4, that the votes of Moldovans helped clinch a victory for the pro-Western incumbent President Maia Sandu. Moldovans living abroad, including expatriates, were considered eligible to vote in this key runoff election. However, Sandu’s opponents, who are backers of a pro-Russian candidate, are now questioning the election’s validity because it depended too heavily on the Moldovan diaspora.

A former Soviet republic, Moldova is a landlocked country known for its vineyards. Moldova borders Ukraine on its northern, eastern and southern sides and Romania to the west. Moldovans in the diaspora have settled in neighboring Romania, as well as Greece, Italy, Spain, and also in the United States and Canada.

BUENOS AIRES — Dressing — and pressing — for Pride: A woman strikes a pose during the 33rd annual Pride Parade in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024. This year’s Pride Parade also marks the first since Argentina’s President Javier Milei took office. This year’s parade, financed mostly through local government funding and 29 diplomatic embassies, did not receive any major federal support, according to the Associated Press. Revelers used the occasion to hold protest demonstrations against Milei’s government policies, which have included the closing of the National Institute Against Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Racism and other diversity spaces.

Chanting the slogan “There is no freedom without rights,” marchers paraded down the boulevard from the Plaza de Mayo square. They are demanding that the Argentine government establish a “comprehensive trans law and anti-discrimination law.”

FRANCE — A moment of exquisite balance: Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin, of Germany, compete in the pairs’ free skating segment at the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating, Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, in Angers, France. Hase and Volodin won the pairs event with a total score of 211.69, just eight points better than Italy’s Sara Conti and Niccolo Macii, who came in second. Another Italian pair, Rebecca Ghilardi and Filippo Ambrosini, were ranked sixth in the short program before improving to third.

A dramatic and spectacular singles figure skating moment unfolded when American athlete Amber Glenn overcame a fall and her own doubts to win her first Grand Prix figure skating title Saturday. Although she led after Friday’s short program, Ms. Glenn fell on a triple flip during the free skate. Her third-best score, however, was still ahead enough of the other skaters to win her the title.

NEW YORK — Two for the price of one on SNL: Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris appears on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” with Maya Rudolph on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024, in New York. The AP reported that Harris had left Charlotte, North Carolina, on a Detroit-bound flight. However, once airborne, aides said she’d be landing elsewhere. Saturday’s episode marked the last “SNL” episode before Election Day. Maya Rudolph, who had done a sendup of Harris in recent months, was begged for a repeat performance. The popular sketch show recently launched its 50th anniversary year.

VALENCIA — Protecting a king from mudslingers: Spain’s King Felipe VI is protected after a crowd of angry survivors of Spain’s floods tossed mud and shouted insults at the King and government officials when they made their first visit to one of the hardest hit towns after floods in Paiporta near Valencia, Spain, Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024. The AP reported that a mob of enraged survivors hurled clots of mud from the storm’s flooding at the Spanish royal couple on Sunday during their first visit to the center of their nation’s deadliest natural disaster in living memory. Two bodyguards were treated for injuries, including a bloody head wound.

The crowds blamed royals and government officials for what they decry as a carelessly organized response to the storm, particularly the unavailability of safe drinking water and a slow response to cleanup.

King Felipe VI succeeded his father, King Juan Carlos, a decade ago amid the elder royal’s scandal-ridden reign. Felipe has sought to be a more transparent leader.

OKLAHOMA CITY — ‘Hello, Allstate … Liberty Mutual … anybody!’: A woman stands outside a damaged home after a tornado hit the area in Oklahoma City, Sunday, Nov. 3, 2024. Severe storms and reported tornadoes that touched down overnight in Oklahoma tore off roofs from buildings and left thousands without power. At least 11 people were taken to hospitals with injuries that were not life-threatening, the AP reported.

Overnight storms are considered particularly dangerous because people in the affected areas are usually asleep, meaning precious time is lost in regaining alertness and finding shelter.
