ALBANY – THE FEDERAL DEPARTMENT of Homeland Security and the state inspector general are investigating hundreds of potentially invalid credentials belonging to state IT contractors, reports the Albany Times Union. The probe began earlier this year, after it was discovered that several foreign computer programmers across two dozen IT companies who perform work for the state allegedly “included fraudulent qualifications or backgrounds” in their documentation, according to a May 28 memo from deputy director of state operations Gregory Anderson that instructed all state agencies to review the documents and job skills of foreign nationals.

Some of the workers have access to sensitive and personally identifying information about state residents and employees; one law enforcement source said investigators were looking into allegations that workers had returned to their home countries and were working remotely.
