Scholastic Roundup: Brooklyn Tech’s engineers are the fastest in the borough

Brooklyn Technical High School was best overall, in the PSAL Cross-Country Borough Championships, staged at Van Cortlandt Park on Saturday. With over 1,068 student-athletes competing, the Engineers placed first — first for both girls and boys in varsity competition, with the boys scoring 22 points and 19 for the girls.

Bronx Science — boys and girls — dominated in the borough of The Bronx, followed by Stuyvesant, Manhattan; Boys High School for Construction Trades (for boys), Queens; Townsend Harris (for girls), also Queens;, followed by McKee Staten Island Tech (for boys) and Susan Wagner (girls), also in Staten Island.

Brooklyn Tech copped the junior varsity division for both boys and girls, with 15 points apiece.

The cross-country team championships are set for Saturday, Nov. 9 at VCP. The Boys Championships race is scheduled for 10 a.m., and the Girls Championship for 10:30 a.m.

Metropolitan Campus has the boys’ number 1 pole position, and Riverdale/Kingsbridge Academy has the girls’ top spot. Thomas Jefferson is pole 2 for boys, John Jay Campus is 2 for girls, James Madison is 4 for girls; Brooklyn Tech is 7 for girls, Brooklyn Tech is 9 for boys, and John Jay Campus is 12 for boys..

Sixty-three student-athletes took the field at Maimonides Park for the 23rd Annual Senior Fall Showcase. They represented some of the finest senior baseball talent in the PSAL Outfielder Arden Paulino of Taft Educational Complex showed some speed in the 60-yard dash, 6.59; followed by shortstop Stevens Pena Silverio of Port Richmond High School, 6.65. Canarsie High had two speeders in Jayden Myrie, 6.79, and Justin Guzman Lopez, 7.03. Franciery Rogue, from Bushwick Campus, was close with 7.16. Other Brooklyn times were recorded by: Antonio Moran, Midwood, 7.38; Cy Greenblatt, Fort Hamilton, 7.43; and New Utrecht’s Kyle Chan, 7.47.

Pitchers who scored highly included: John Memoli and John Civiletti, Lafayette Educational Complex; and Antonio Moran, Midwood High School.

Brooklyn outfielders who scored well included: Justin Guzman Lopez, Canarsie Educational Campus; and Aayan Ramamurthy, Brooklyn Tech, who drew a high grade for arm strength. Lopez also demonstrated his skill with the bat, as did Franciery Roque, Bushwick Campus. Guzman’s exit-speed velocity off a tee was 79 mph; Roque scored a 75 mph.

Now celebrating its eighth year, St. Edmund Prep again teams up with the Side-Out Foundation — a nonprofit charity organization — to raise funds for breast cancer research during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The monthlong fundraising activity at the school, – “Dig Pink,” again was spearheaded by the girls’ volleyball program.
Senior captain Sienna James was named this year’s Dig Pink Ambassador. A bake sale, along with T-shirt sales, a 50-50 raffle and pink ribbon face painting highlighted the activities. A raffle for two Zach Bryan tickets in concert was also part of the fundraising.
This year’s Dig Pink matches saw the St. Edmund Eagles junior varsity and varsity volleyball teams against Bishop Loughlin High School. Next up is a student-faculty match later this month to support the fund.

Roosevelt High School is next for Fort Hamilton’s (5-1) football team – tonight (Nov. 1). The Tigers won their last two— a 22-8 triumph over Stuyvesant, followed by last week’s 24-21 squeaker over Brooklyn Tech.

Aiden Farley passed for 205 yards in the Tech win, while Aiden Porter had 66 receiving yards and a touchdown. Kevin Lin’s 10-yard touchdown grab from Farley proved to be the winning score, as the Tigers overcame a 21-18 deficit in the fourth quarter.

St. Joseph’s University, Brooklyn, women’s soccer team, celebrated Senior Day last Saturday afternoon at Aviator Field, honoring Lauren Van Der Kamp, Maya O’Neal-Davis, Bethany Perez and Hayden Reis. The Bears dropped a 6-0 decision to SUNY Maritime College.

The men’s soccer team at Brooklyn’s St. Joseph’s University earned a 1-0 win over Farmingdale State College last Saturday evening at Aviator Field. The win solidified the Bears’ place in the Skyline Conference Tournament.

Seniors Diego Volpe, Arturo Franco (Millenium), Victor Naci and Matthew Kieblesz were all honored as part of the program’s Senior Night ceremony prematch. Kieblesz scored his fifth goal of the season in the win.

It was Cougars Appreciation Day for the Medgar Evers men’s soccer team, as they finalized its 2024 campaign defeating the Bloodhounds of John Jay College at Red Hook Recreation Center, 1-0, Friday. With the victory, Medgar Evers finished 3-12-2 (1-5-1 CUNY).
Prior to the match, seniors Daniel Hackett, Dudley Dorfeuille and Hamou Soumare were honored in a special ceremony. Taye Simon scored the lone goal of the match.

Brooklyn College sophomore midfielder George Koufos was named City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) Men’s Soccer Player of the Week for the second time this season.

Helping Brooklyn to a 3-2 conference win over John Jay, Koufos scored all three goals for a hat trick in the win and secured the No. 4 seed for the Bulldogs in their upcoming CUNYAC Championship tournament.

The Brooklyn College women’s soccer team topped York College 4-0, Saturday, on Senior Day. Chelsea Gonzalez, Gianna DiPronio, Julissa Chino and Jaymi Quintuna all scored for Brooklyn.

The Brooklyn College women’s tennis team scored a 4-3 non-conference victory over William Paterson in their regular season finale, Friday, at home. Brooklyn improved to 3-10 overall with the win. Brooklyn singles winners were Diana Rezk, Tiffany Edwards and Nora Zhu.

Brooklyn’s men’s swimming and diving team opens its season Saturday (Nov. 2) at St. Joseph’s Long Island. The men defeated Mt. St. Mary, 96-76, in a tune-up last Saturday as James Lewe took the 50 freestyle in 24:86.

Akedah Rafat, a senior outside hitter for Brooklyn College’s women’s volleyball team, received honorable mention accolades for her efforts in Brooklyn’s 2-2 split on the week.
Totaling 44 kills, 55 digs and six service aces in four matches played, Rafat helped Brooklyn top Old Westbury and Lehman.

LIU’s Malachi Davis has been named to the 2024-25 Preseason All Northeast Conference Men’s Basketball Team. He is a transfer from Arizona State. The Sharks tip off the season Nov. 4 at Ole Miss and host its home opener on Saturday (Nov. 9) against Pratt Institute at noon.

LIU’s men’s hockey team defeated 17th-ranked Notre Dame, 5-2 Saturday night in South Bend., Ind. Cade Mason, Riflery Wallack, Austin Brimmer, John Gormley and Isaac Lambert scored for LIU.

Ethan Greenwood threw two touchdown passes and caught the go-ahead score after hauling in a 26-yard pass from Luca Stanzaic, leading LIU to a 24-21 win over Central Connecticut State last Saturday afternoon. Greenwood finished with 120 passing yards, two touchdowns and 80 rushing yards.

Pratt Institute’s men’s soccer team concluded its 2024 campaign with a 4-0 defeat to Marywood University in an Atlantic East Conference match, Saturday afternoon at Aviator Field. The Cannoneers honored two four-year members of the squad, Carter Tillman and Diego Pina, prior to the game. Pratt (2-11-1, 1-5-0) ended their inaugural season in the AEC.

Six seniors were honored at Pratt Institute’s women’s AEC 6-1 soccer victory over Centenary University last week at Randall’s Island Field. A pair of seniors put Pratt (5-9, 2-3) ahead and never trailed in the contest. Siena Sujitno and Kayla Galvan scored the first goals for the Cannoneers. Claire Hook made it 3-0 with her third goal of the season; Kat Thomsen scored her eighth for a 4-0 advantage; Emma Pratt followed with a score, and Katye Nolan scored the final tally.

Pratt Institute’s women’s volleyball team notched their first AEC victory, defeating Immaculata University in straight sets, last Saturday afternoon. Pratt was led by Kelsy Padilla’s (Williamsburg High School) near double-double of nine kills and nine digs on .250 hitting with two aces. Colleen Russell and Natalie Dziadzio both landed five kills each on an efficient hitting night, Dziadzio hitting .400 and Russell .308.
