NY Attorney General leads coalition to limit plastic production
ALBANY/NATIONWIDE — NEW YORK ATTORNEY GENERAL LETITIA JAMES URGED THE U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT to actively work on curbing plastic pollution in a follow up to the United Nations General Assembly meeting in September. Leading a ten-state coalition of her counterparts, James sent a letter to the U.S. Department of State, applauding the U.S. delegation to the fifth session of the UN’s Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastics Pollution for its recent decision to support global limits on plastic production and to support the development of a global list of problematic chemicals and plastic products that should be phased out.
James and the coalition, representing mostly East Coast states plus California and Hawaii, are also calling for an ambitious, comprehensive and legally-binding international agreement to mitigate global plastic pollution and to fight for bold policies to end plastic pollution; reject false solutions such as chemical recycling; prioritize the development of reuse systems; support a scientific organization and funding to implement the treaty.to the global climate crisis; and amplify the voices of frontline communities most harmed by plastic production
Brooklyn is the hometown for at least two leading members of James’ staff, including Chief Deputy Attorney General Meghan Faux of the Division for Social Justice led by and First Deputy Attorney General Jennifer Levy.
