LITTLE HAITI – GOVERNOR KATHY HOCHUL popped in on Little Haiti last week, rendezvousing with its Assemblymember, Brooklyn Democratic Party Chairwoman Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, as well as area constituents, reports amNY. Little Haiti, in East Flatbush, is home to many Haitian and Haitian-American families and businesses, including La Baguette Shop, a Haitian and French bakery where the governor picked up sweet treats. Hochul later remarked on X that Little Haiti has “some of the best food in the city.”

Hochul’s tour came following the announcement on Monday at a press conference of an election integrity initiative with state Attorney General Letitia James, where the governor warned voters to be cautious of misleading and AI-generated misinformation and propaganda. She earlier this year condemned viral rumors, spread by Republican VP candidate J.D. Vance, that accused a Haitian immigrant community in Ohio of stealing and eating pet cats, writing on X, “I am outraged by the bigoted attacks on Haitian-Americans from those seeking our nation’s highest offices,” and pledging to stand with New York’s large Haitian diaspora.

The governor on Monday brought up the attacks on the Haitian community following a widely-criticized anti-Puerto Rico remark during former President Trump’s Sunday rally at Madison Square Garden. Speaking at a gala for the United Bodegas of America, Hochul stated, “First they attacked Haiti, now Puerto Rico. What’s next? The other islands of the Caribbean? I must stand here as the governor who represents a million Puerto Ricans. And a million Dominicans… and call out such vile hatred spewed against our friends and our neighbors.”
