Brooklyn Navy Yard toying with idea to start autonomous vehicle pilot
NAVY YARD – THE BROOKLYN NAVY Yard is considering developing an autonomous vehicle program, according to Mass Transit Mag. The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation recently issued a Request for Expressions of Interest in creating a self-driving pilot system that would help people travel around the Navy Yard, as well as supplementing the existing Yard-to-subway shuttle system. After reviewing RFEI submissions, BDNYC will likely move on to the Request for Proposals stage and seek contractors to build the system; the Yard, which has hosted previous last-mile AV pilots, says its environment is ideal for testing, as it contains varied street and transit types, as well as offering AV developers opportunities to work with other tech companies housed on the campus.
“Transportation is a critical link for businesses and employees at the Brooklyn Navy Yard and we are committed to exploring solutions that allow us to enhance mobility within the campus and beyond while also supporting innovation in the industry that is consistent with our mission,” said Lindsay Greene, president and CEO of BNYDC. RFEI proposals are due by noon on Dec. 23; more info can be found in the Mass Transit article.
