NATIONWIDE – DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME officially ends for the year this weekend in the U.S., with the exception of Arizona and Hawaii, which do not observe it; Canada, Mexico and other North American territories are on the same schedule. On Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 a.m., automatic clocks will “fall back” to 1 a.m., while other timepieces will have to be adjusted manually. State and federal lawmakers have made numerous attempts to do away with the annual change, which experts say is disruptive to sleep and productivity; most recently, last fall, Albany debated two bills that would make DST permanent, but the legislation became stuck in committee and failed to pass. A federal law that would accomplish the same feat passed the Senate unanimously in 2022, but failed to move forward in the House in both 2022 and 2023.

Much of Europe and portions of the Middle East and North Africa observed the change last weekend; in the southern hemisphere, DST begins for Chile, Australia and New Zealand in September or October and ends in April.
