Teen killed, another injured subway-surfing in Queens
CORONA – A 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL was killed and another teen girl was critically injured while subway-surfing at 111th Street in Corona on Sunday night, reports Gothamist, marking the sixth death citywide from the deadly pastime this year; other victims include an 11-year-old who died in Park Slope in September and a 14-year-old killed in Coney Island in January. The New York Post reports the pair were riding on top of a 7 train when they fell between cars and were run over by the train. The injured girl, who sources said suffered a fractured skull and brain bleeding, is being treated at Elmhurst Hospital, while the 13-year-old has not yet been publicly identified. Mayor Adams on X posted, “Heartbroken to hear that subway surfing — and the pursuit of social media clout — has stolen another life;” the mayor has previously called on platforms including YouTube and TikTok to take down viral videos of the trend.
Miguel Degante, age 17, told Gothamist that his cousin died while subway-surfing in 2022, faulting social media: “It was shocking really, but not surprising because I’ve seen a lot of people already doing this, and a lot of people died… They were just really following what the internet was showing. They really had no motivation but just doing it for fun.”
