Adams suffers in mayoral polls as Cuomo, James carry support
CITYWIDE – A NEW NYT/SIENA survey shows that a slim majority of New Yorkers believe Mayor Adams should step down, in the wake of the federal bribery charges filed against Adams in September over an alleged quid-pro-quo with the government of Turkey, reports the New York Times. 53% of voters favor resignation, while 40% believe he should serve out his term; only 23% approve of the mayor’s job performance.
In a theoretical Democratic mayoral primary, Adams would receive the support of just 12% of surveyed Democrats, while ex-Governor Andrew Cuomo would net 22% and state A.G. Letitia James would receive 19%. Public Advocate Jumaane Williams would come in fourth with 6%, while other candidates with lesser name recognition, like Comptroller Brad Lander and state Sen. Zellnor Myrie, polled at 4% or lower. Neither Cuomo nor James has yet entered the race, although Cuomo has strongly signaled interest, and James has received support from influential Democrats concerned about the former governor. Previous polls have also indicated a wellspring of support for former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Adams has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, which center around allegations that he accepted illegal campaign donations and luxury gifts in exchange for performing favors for Turkey, including the hasty approval of an allegedly fire-unsafe consulate building in Manhattan and the snubbing of a Brooklyn cultural center that favors the Turkish opposition.
