Top officials to rally at Borough Hall Saturday for Equal Rights Amendment
BOROUGH HALL — MORE THAN 20 BROOKLYN ELECTED OFFICIALS will be joined by activists from across the borough to rally on the steps of Brooklyn Borough Hall at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26, in support of Proposition 1, the New York Equal Rights Amendment. The rally, hosted by State Sen. Andrew Gounardes (D-26) aims to encourage New Yorkers to vote in favor of the ERA (Proposition 1) on Election Day.
The ERA would update the state constitution by prohibiting discrimination based on ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, and sex — including sexual orientation and gender identity. It also seeks to protect reproductive autonomy and access to reproductive health care. Gounardes, an outspoken advocate for the ERA, emphasizes the importance of this amendment amid increasing attacks on reproductive freedom and disinformation campaigns.
“Here in New York, we don’t have to watch helplessly as ultraconservative legislators advance a regressive agenda that hurts vulnerable communities,” Gounardes wrote in an op-ed in BKReader. “This November, we have a unique opportunity to enshrine human rights into our state constitution.”
