Red Hook residents complain of illegally parked RVs
RED HOOK — A GROUP OF Red Hook residents are fed up with what they say are legions of illegally parked RVs and camper vans on the neighborhood’s streets, reports CBS News, raising sanitation and safety concerns. While city law says RVs can’t be parked in one spot for longer than 24 hours, local man Frank Falcinelli told CBS that these rules are routinely flouted, with law enforcement nowhere to be found.
“If I ran a generator 24/7, I would be ticketed. If I parked my car on the street and had no inspection stickers, if I had a trailer with no inspection sticker or registration, I would be towed,” Falcinelli said, while a camper resident told CBS that the area around Red Hook Park was rarely ticketed.
Queens Councilmember Robert Holden told CBS that his district had experienced similar issues, and is promoting a new Council bill that would ban overnight street parking for RVs, similar to commercial vehicles.
The NYPD says it is aware of the RV issue and has issued hundreds of parking violations in Red Hook so far this year, although it was not specified whether these were for live-aboards or other types of vehicles, and that it has removed some of the mobile homes, while the Department of Sanitation says it plans to sweep for abandoned vehicles in the neighborhood in the coming weeks.
