NY Liberty win first championship
CROWN HEIGHTS — THE NEW YORK Liberty at the Barclays Center on Sunday narrowly bested the Minnesota Lynx in game 5 of the WNBA Finals to win their first-ever championship, reports the New York Times, taking the title in front of a sold-out crowd with a 67-62 overtime victory. Although down in the first half after a series of missed shots by stars Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu, the team surged back after halftime with the aid of surprise swap Nyara Sabally, a reserve center player who scored 13 points in the second half, alongside 13 from Stewart, while power forward Jonquel Jones was named Finals MVP with 17 points. The Liberty, which moved from Westchester to Barclays in 2019 after being purchased by Nets owners Joe and Clara Wu Tsai, have made it to the WNBA Finals on five previous occasions, but have never before won the title.
Mayor Adams in response to the victory announced that the city plans to hold a ticker tape parade for the Liberty, with details forthcoming, and that government buildings including Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island borough halls as well as the David M. Dinkins Municipal Building in Manhattan will be lit up in the team’s seafoam green colors on Monday night.
