Bushwick Community Darkroom reopens in new location
BUSHWICK — THE BUSHWICK COMMUNITY Darkroom photography center has reopened in a new storefront on Himrod Street, reports Bushwick Daily, the art space’s third and largest location since its founding in 2011 by a trio of local photographers. The upgraded studio offers facilities for analog-camera enthusiasts to develop film in a communal space, as well as a gallery area and beginner photography classes. Co-founder and owner Lucia Rollows told Bushwick Daily that the studio was born out of her need for an accessible darkroom nearby and began as a self-built Kickstarter project housed in her building’s basement. BCD expanded over the years as a result of the enthusiasm of Bushwick’s artistic community, whose members she says she hopes feel “comfortable and autonomous” in the space.
“I missed the interaction you get in communal darkrooms where you don’t have to talk to people but you’re still surrounded by the energy of others. As an introvert, I wanted a space like that, where you can work and connect when you feel like it,” Rollows said.
The Bushwick Community Darkroom is now located at 334 Himrod Street, with its facilities available to rent 24 hours a day for members. Non-members can also use the space during open hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
