Maimonides Health honors two leaders during Hispanic Heritage Month celebration
BOROUGH PARK/SUNSET PARK — Maimonides Health welcomed several community organizations across southern Brooklyn for its second annual joint celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Maimonides leaders and staff hosted the event, held at Azteca Hall in Sunset Park, with representatives from local elected officials’ offices and more than 40 community groups that primarily serve Brooklyn’s Hispanic community attending. Ismael Castillo, assistant vice president of security at Maimonides Medical Center, and Carina Vizhnay, community relations coordinator for Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, were recognized with awards for service to the Hispanic and Latinx community. As part of the event, clinicians and staff from Maimonides Cancer Center, Jaffe Stroke Center, Heart & Vascular Center and Departments of OB/GYN, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology, Nutrition, Patient Experience and Human Resources hosted a clinical mingle with community group representatives, with the goal of collaborating to provide more accessible health care to Brooklyn’s Hispanic and Latinx community.
Maimonides is continuing to build upon renewed efforts in recent years to strengthen and create services and outreach focused on its Hispanic and Latinx patients, such as translation services, community screening events and new initiatives like Brooklyn’s only Spanish-language cancer support group. Self-defense workshops are offered in English, Spanish, Chinese and Arabic.
