City’s Health chief to quit Friday, ahead of schedule
CITYWIDE — CITY HEALTH DEPARTMENT commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan is set to officially step down from his post on Friday, reports Gothamist, with city chief medical officer Dr. Michelle Morse filling in as interim commissioner, according to an internal email shared with the site. Vasan resigned last month citing family issues, but had initially stated that he would remain in office until at least early 2025 to facilitate a smoother transition. The doctor told Gothamist that the family issues have now “taken on greater urgency.” Vasan is one of several high-ranking officials to resign over the last month as the mayor faces federal bribery charges, but does not appear to be under the scrutiny of the investigations now haunting some Adams administration members.
Other recent resignations include those of police chief Eddie Caban, Caban’s interim replacement Thomas Donlon, schools chief David Banks, Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, Deputy Mayor Philip Banks, chief legal counsel Lisa Zornberg, and aides Winnie Greco and Mohamed Bahi. City Hall also fired aides Rana Abbasova, reportedly a witness against Adams, and Ahsan Chughta.
