Scholastic Roundup: PSAL cross country is off and running

The PSAL Cross Country season got rolling as 705 student-athletes took to the hills of Van Cortlandt Park last week.

The Flying Dragons of the High School for Math, Science and Engineering at CCNY – boys and girls – made some timely statements by capturing the Group Run team titles. The young women of Math, Science and Engineering ran a team average of 23:01 and were led by strong performances from Phoebe Estep, 21:49 and Bo Bernard, 22:47.

The young men of Math, Science and Engineering were led by Henry Dahl, 18:06 and Brendan Hofmann, 18:13. Two young freshmen runners turned in good performances in the 1.5m run – Aisha Wajid – DeWitt Clinton, 10:16; and Colin Toung – Manhattan Center, 9:17.

The PSAL Borough Cross Country Championships are set for Saturday, October 26th at Van Cortlandt Park.

Speaking of cross country, Pratt Institute’s women’s team placed three runners in the top 20 and took home the team title at the Queensborough CC Invitational, Sunday at Van Cortlandt Park – the men placed 12th overall.

In her first collegiate meet, Ela Segrave-Daly posted a time of 21:53.8 on the 5-kilometer course to lead the Cannoneers and take fifth overall. Giovanna Lisa crossed in 23:16 in 13th place and Sarah Cawley rounded out the three medalists in 17th place finishing in 23:54.3. Leona Bergin was 26th overall in 25:04.5 and Kathleen Chen completed the scoring five taking 35th place in 26:09.4.

With a team score of 73, Pratt had a 58-point victory over Bard College in second place (131 points) in the team competition that featured 17 scoring teams.

On the men’s side for Pratt, rookie Justin Caio captured 22nd overall with a time of 31:18 on the 8-kilometer track. Andrew Langpap finished in 74th in 36:54.3. Andrew Weiss and Henry Domst finished 100th and 101st in 38:53.6 and 38:53.0.

Pratt returns to Van Cortlandt Park on Sunday, October 20th for the Medgar Evers Invitational in their final tune-up before the Atlantic East Championship.

The Brooklyn College women’s cross-country team managed to place twelfth in the Queensborough Invitational, Sunday.
Daniella Gostey finished first among all Bulldog runners, taking 37th overall with a time of 26:14.5; averaging 8:26.7 per-mile-run. Shirin Muratora finished 41st (26:59.7). Brooklyn travels to Branch Brook Park in Newark, New Jersey for the Highlander Invitational hosted by the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Saturday, October 12th.

Brooklyn’s men’s squad placed fourth at the Queensborough Invitational, ahead of 17 other teams that participated.

Frank Ferrante finished first among all Bulldogs and 15th overall with a time of 31:04.0, averaging 6:14.9 per-mile. Azizjon Sharifov ran right behind him in 16th place overall by a margin of 0.9 seconds, finishing with a time of 31:04.0, averaging 6:15.1 per-mile.

City University of New York Athletic Conference coaches picked Brooklyn College as a third-place finisher in tennis this fall season. Baruch was voted to win the conference; while Brooklyn senior Diana Rezk was selected as Player to Watch in 2024.

Women’s volleyball coaches tabbed the Brooklyn Bulldogs to place fourth in the league; with senior outside hitter Aleah Rafat as a Player to Watch in 2024. Rafat and freshman outside hitter, Danielle Fuxman, have been named the conference’s Women’s Volleyball Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively.

Helping Brooklyn to a 2-0 record on the week, with both wins coming Sunday in a trimatch hosted by the Bulldogs, Rafat racked-up 22 kills in their two matches while hitting .429. She also totaled 11 digs and 3 service aces on the day. In Brooklyn’s 3-0 win over Lehman, she put-away a match-high 13 kills and came up with six digs.
Fuxman totaled 15 kills while hitting .542. She also chipped-in with five digs and had a block assist in the Bulldogs’ two victories.

Brooklyn College sophomore midfielder George Koufos has been named the conference’s Men’s Soccer Player of the Week.
Helping Brooklyn to a 2-0 record on the week with both wins coming in CUNYAC play, Koufos totaled three points. He assisted on Brooklyn’s first goal in their 2-0 win at Medgar Evers and closed-out the week by scoring the game-winner on a converted penalty kick to boost the Bulldogs to a 2-1 conference victory over Hunter.

LIU women’s soccer forward Grace Hennig has been named Northeast Conference Player of the Week. The honor comes after Hennig led the Sharks to a 4-1 victory over conference foe Chicago State, Sunday.

Alan Martinez found the back of the net for his second goal of the season in the men’s 1-1 tie against Saint Francis University, Sunday. LIU hosts Fairleigh Dickinson, Sunday, October 13th at 1 pm.

In their first contest of the season, the LIU men’s hockey team beat Simon Fraser, 7-5 in an exhibition. Josh Zary finished the game with a hat track, Carter Rapalje scored twice, while Sixten Jennersjo and Isaiah Fox also scored.

LIU’s football team will be looking for their first when they host Stonehill, Saturday (Oct. 12th).

The Sharks dropped a 47-21 decision at Duquesne last week. Sharks’ quarterback Ethan Greenwood tossed two touchdown passes – including a 67-yard strike to Michael Love. He threw his second touchdown of the game connecting with Evan Brooks in the third quarter.

Freshman running back Cory Nichols found the end zone with a rushing touchdown and JoJo Garcia finished the game with nine total tackles, while Qualil Lumpkins recorded seven.

Anya Weilandt scored the lone goal for LIU as the Lady Sharks hockey team dropped a 4-1 decision against Mankato in Minnesota, last Saturday. They return home and host Stonehill, Friday (Oct. 11th).
A night earlier, transfer goaltender Abbie Thompson made her LIU debut in her home state – Minnesota – in the Sharks 4-0 loss to Minnesota State, Mankato.

The St. Joseph’s University (Brooklyn) men’s soccer team were on the losing end of a 3-1 score against Manhattanville, Saturday.

It was Victor Naci who did all the scoring for the Bears.

Bishop Loughlin boys’ soccer, opened their season with a 7-2 win over Moore Catholic.
