BOSTON — ETHEL KENNEDY, WIDOW OF SLAIN NEW YORK SEN. ROBERT F. KENNEDY and one of the last remaining members of the extended family’s generation that included President John F. Kennedy, died on Thursday at 96, the Associated Press reported.

Kennedy was hospitalized last week for a stroke that occurred in her sleep, the family reported at the time. The Associated Press reported that she had been a millionaire’s daughter who married RFK, and her husband would later become the U.S. Attorney General under his brother’s administration before JFK was assassinated in December 1963.

Ethel Kennedy was with her husband when he was fatally shot in the Ambassador Hotel just moments after winning the 1968 California Presidential Primary. At the time of her husband’s assassination, Ethel Kennedy had, by age 40, publicly endured more deaths of loved ones than most people do in a lifetime. She then raised their 11 children, and for her fortitude, garnered the respect and admiration of the then-family matriarch, Rose Kennedy.

Ethel Kennedy founded the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights soon after husband’s death, advocating for issues such as gun control and human rights. She joined brother-in-law Ted Kennedy in endorsing then-Sen. Barack Obama for the Presidency in 2008.
