Pilot’s in-flight death prompts emergency landing at JFK Airport
QUEENS — A Turkish Airlines flight had to make an emergency landing at JFK Airport in Jamaica, Queens, after its pilot died of natural causes during a flight from Seattle, reports the Daily News. The pilot, identified as 59-year-old Ilcehin Pehlivan, had been operating the plane when he collapsed in an Istanbul-bound flight that originated in Seattle and did not respond to first aid.
The flight crew consisted of a second pilot and co-pilot who took over navigation and radioed to make an emergency landing in New York. FlightAware data showed that the jet had already been in flight for eight hours at the time of the emergency landing around 6 a.m. Pehlivan had undergone a physical in March that revealed no health problems pre-empting his ability to work.
The passengers were being assisted with flight arrangements to reach Istanbul.
