First ‘Montague Open’ Pickleball Tournament a smashing success
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Montague Street was converted into Pickleball Avenue on Sunday for the first-ever Montague Open Pickleball Tournament, sponsored by the Brooklyn Heights Association, the Montague Street BID and NYC DOT as part of Open Streets.
The doubles team of Nicholas Aronica and Connor McAlary emerged as the tournament’s inaugural pickleball champs, after a hard-fought round-robin with 16 contenders. The team took home armfuls of prizes and gift certificates donated by Montague Street merchants including WundaBar, Barry’s, Chama Mama, GTHR Yoga, Books Are Magic, James Weir, L’Appartement 4F and European Wax.
Two tournament courts were set up, and casual play was also available to all on two open-play courts (one for adults and one for kids), said BHA Deputy Director Kim Glickman.
“This is our second year hosting pickleball at Montague Open Streets,” Glickman told the Brooklyn Eagle. “The idea came last year from a volunteer who lives on Montague Street, so this year he suggested having a tournament — and it was fabulous!”
“It was like people were watching Wimbledon!” she added.
