NATIONWIDE — THE UNION THAT REPRESENTS 45,000 U.S. DOCKWORKERS WHO WENT ON STRIKE early Tuesday has reached a deal to suspend the work stoppage until Jan. 15, the Associated Press reported Thursday night.

The International Longshoremen’s Association said its members will  resume working immediately and the suspension of the strike will give them time to negotiate a new contract. Both sides also reached agreement on wages, but no details were given, according to a joint statement from the ports and union Thursday night. The strike affected ports and docks from Maine to Texas as well, including the one in Red Hook.

While the walkout raised the risk of shortages of goods on store shelves had it lasted more than a few weeks, most retailers had stocked up or shipped items early in anticipation of the work stoppage.
