Fujianese restaurant named for a greeting opens in Prospect Heights
BROOKLYN — EVAN TORETTO LI HAS OPENED NIN HAO IN PROSPECT HEIGHTS, OFFERING A MENU INSPIRED BY HIS FUJIAN ROOTS AND FAMILY TRADITIONS. The restaurant showcases dishes like beef ban ban rice noodles and Fujianese spicy wonton, highlighting flavors rarely seen in Brooklyn’s food scene, even with its rich pan-Asian culinary presence that has for some time also included Thai and Malaysian cuisine. Li’s native Fujian sits on the coast of southeast China, He told food critic Scott Lynch of Brooklyn Magazine, “Chinese food is more than just Cantonese, Shanghainese and Sichuan! But no one was representing that.”
Nin Hao’s space at 595 Dean Street features a stunning mural by artist Chemin Hsiao. Li hopes to bring joy to the neighborhood by sharing the authentic Fujianese dishes he grew up with, pointing out that the restaurant’s name refers to a respectful way of saying “hello.”
