Brooklyn officials applaud city’s reversal on McGuinness Blvd. ‘road diet’
GREENPOINT — AFTER WATERING DOWN a years-in-the-making plan to improve the safety of Greenpoint’s McGuinness Blvd., the city again reversed itself on Wednesday and will be putting the deadly street on a “road diet” as originally planned, by eliminating one northbound and one southbound travel lane, Brooklyn officials announced.
Mayor Adams had put the kibosh on the original safety plan, causing a community uproar.
“We are excited to see safety improvements implemented on McGuinness Boulevard this month and are immensely grateful to the Make McGuinness Safe community coalition for their relentless advocacy. We will work together with DOT to monitor and adjust to ensure this is a success for Greenpoint,” Brooklyn electeds including Borough President Antonio Reynoso, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Rep. Nydia Velázquez, state Sen. Kristen Gonzalez and Julia Salazar, Assemblymember Emily Gallagher and Councilmember Lincoln Restler in a joint statement.
The inside story: “McGuinness Boulevard reversal is being… reversed… after the aide who reportedly tapped Adams to make the change handed in her phone to Feds on Friday,” Curbed writer Adrienen Quinlan tweeted on Wednesday.
