National Grid will soon start gas main upgrades in Bensonhurst
BENSONHURST — NATIONAL GRID WILL BE INSTALLING NEW GAS MAINS along several streets in Bensonhurst and New Utrecht, Brooklyn Community Board 11 announced on Tuesday, Oct. 1, although an exact start date has not yet been given. The gas mains are part of planned construction within the district to improve the reliability of the gas system.
Gas mains will be installed along 18th Avenue between 71st St. and 76th St., including Bay Ridge Parkway (also named 75th St.); on 71st St. between 18th and 19th avenues; 72nd through 74th streets between 17th and 19th avenues, on Bay Ridge Parkway between 17th and 19th avenues, and at 18th Ave. and Bay Ridge Parkway.
Local residents and businesses should expect temporary disruption of street parking, painted mark-outs of underground utilities within the project scope area; street excavation and installation of new gas main; upgrades or replacements of customers’ individual gas service lines; relocation of gas meters outside of the home or business per New York state requirements (one at no charge); and temporary and then permanent restoration of disturbed streets and sidewalks per DOT specifications.
National Grid will reach out to affected residents and businesses before work is done and advises everyone to avoid scams by asking the utility workers to provide the IDs that all its employees carry. National Grid also publishes a scam alert, warning that anyone trying to charge money for the upgrade work are fraudsters. If this happens, residents can call 1-718-643-4050 or contact law enforcement.
