ISRAEL — A BARRAGE OF an estimated 200 missiles was fired at Israel by Iran on Tuesday night and was mostly intercepted before striking populated areas, resulting in the death of one Palestinian man in the city of Jericho who was struck by falling debris, reports the Associated Press

The retaliatory move was expected by many following Israel’s attacks on Iranian proxy group Hezbollah within Lebanon over the past two weeks, including a pager bomb attack that wounded Iran’s ambassador to the country, air strikes on alleged Hezbollah installations and a current ground operation in the border region, but is expected to heighten tensions throughout the Middle East.

The Pentagon stated that it had not been forewarned of the missile strikes by Iran, unlike during a previous Iranian attack on Israel in April, and that the U.S. military, as well as ally Jordan, helped to shoot down several of the missiles. Iran stated that the intended targets of the attacks were Israeli air bases and claimed success in hitting them, while Israel has promised unspecified “consequences.”

This is a developing story.
