Charges filed in five violent cases at Sunset Park MDC
DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN/SUNSET PARK — CHARGES WERE MADE ON MONDAY, SEPT. 30, in five cases addressing violent crime at New York City’s federal pretrial detention facility, the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC-Brooklyn) located in Sunset Park, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York announced.
The charges include those against inmates over the past several months: for the murder of Uriel Whyte on June 7, 2024; the murder of Edwin Cordero on July 17, 2024; an attempted murder on April 27, 2024; and two violent assaults on Aug. 24 and 27, 2024. The defendants, one of whom is from Brooklyn, and all of whom were previously detained at MDC-Brooklyn on other charges, will be arraigned in the coming days.
In one case, the government on Monday sent a letter to the court requesting pretrial detention of the defendants Andrew Simpson, also known as “Drew” and “Drewski,” and Devone Thomas, also known as “Von.” Both defendants are charged by indictment in the above-captioned case with murder, for their roles in the June 7 stabbing and murder of Uriel Whyte at the MDC. Simpson and Thomas are additionally charged with assault. The U.S. Attorney considers them both to be flight risks and pose a danger to the community. After the murder, the defendants hastened to clean up and remove evidence.
“No bail package will protect the community from the danger posed by the defendants,” wrote the U.S. Attorney.
A grand jury returned the Indictment against Simpson and Thomas. If convicted of the premeditated murder of Whyte within the MDC, as charged in Count One of the Indictment, both defendants face a sentence of death or a mandatory term of life imprisonment.
