Scholastic Roundup: The Tigers take on the Kangaroos
Boys and Girls High School — you are next.
The football Tigers of Fort Hamilton High School put their perfect 2-0 record on the line Saturday when they host the Boys and Girls Kangaroos at noon.
Last week, the Tigers ripped Bayside (0-3) 64-28 – that is 110 points in their first two ballgames — they opened the season with a 46-0 whitewashing over Cardozo High School by rolling up 317 total yards – 221 rushing.
What is even more amazing, according to official game stats, the Tigers amassed 475 total yards in the Bayside win — Bayside failed to gain a yard. Fort Hamilton had 302 yards passing – again to Bayside’s zip.
August Porter, a junior, opened the scoring for the Fort, on the receiving end of a 44-yard pass from junior quarterback Aidan Farley. Porter ended the day with his second touchdown — a 38-yard bomb from Farley.
Sophomore Harold “Trey” Marshall III scored on a seven-yard run; junior Kevin Lin scored on a 31-yard pass from Farley; junior Emanuel King scored on a 22-yard run; and Zaire Thomas received an eight-yard pass from Farley for another Tiger score.

The 20th Annual Baseball Junior Fall Showcase is set for Monday, Oct. 14. College coaches, as well as professional scouts, will be invited to attend. The showcase is designed to display the baseball skills of the Public Schools Athletic League’s (PSAL’s) junior student-athletes who possess the ability to compete on the college level or have the potential to one day sign a professional contract. Jazmyn Foberg has been named an assistant coach for the gymnastics program at LIU. She comes to LIU after serving as an assistant coach at Arizona State University, a position she’s held since October 2023. She was the primary vault coach, the secondary coach on the floor, and worked heavily on floor-routine choreography. She also served as the head gymnastics coach at the Apollo School of Gymnastics from August, 2022 to August, 2023.
Foberg garnered three SEC championships while competing at the University of Florida; and was a four-time SEC Academic Honor Roll Recipient. The Florida native was a three-time member of the U.S. national gymnastics team from 2014 to 2015, where she was a two-time USA national champion.
Last Thursday, LIU announced the hiring of Taylor Colwell as the program’s new head coach.

LIU women’s ice hockey team, the 2023-24 New England Women’s Hockey Alliance’s (NEWHA) regular-season champions, have been selected as the preseason favorite to repeat, according to a vote by the conference’s head coaches.
The Sharks finished 26-2-0 in conference and 28-9-0 overall a year-ago, while earning 47 points and received five first-place votes in the league’s poll. The Sharks return standout blueliner Bri Eid a First-Teram All-NEWHA honoree. LIU starts their season Sept. 29 with a road exhibition against Princeton before their true season opener at Minnesota State Mankato, Oct. 4. LIU’’s home opener is Oct. 18 against Assumption at the Northwell Health Ice Center.

The St. Joseph’s University (Brooklyn) women’s volleyball team split the second annual Battle of Brooklyn tri-match last Saturday afternoon at the Hill Center.
The Bears came out on top of a five-set thriller against Pratt before dropping their second match of the day to Brooklyn College in straight sets.
Rachel Meltsin (James Madison) dished out a career-best 46 assists; setting a single-match record for five set contests and one shy of equaling the program’s overall record dating back to the 2007 season, for the Bears in the Pratt match. She added 10 digs, three kills and a block to her stat-line. Teammate Anna Makarounas (Edward R. Murrow) served-up three aces.
In the Brooklyn College match, Meltsin totaled 20 assists, three digs and a pair of aces.

Jennifer Sarji, a Fontbonne Hall Academy grad, set a personal record in the 5K with a time of 24:56.6, earning her 57th place for the St. Joseph’s University (Brooklyn) women Bears at Saturday’s Golden Eagle Invitational, hosted by St. Joseph’s (Long Island). Brooklyn’s Danielle Bourne and Mercedes Perez followed closely with times of 26:25.0 and 26:36.8 respectively. The women’s team finished 12th out of 17 teams.
For the men’s team, Alex Helfant clocked in at 36:50.0, while Tariq Belma (Bishop Loughlin) finished at 37:00. Joshua Gordon (Bishop Loughlin) also set a personal best in the 8K with a time of 41:15.1.
Senior runner Helfant — from Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy International — was recognized as the Skyline Conference’s men’s Rookie of the Week.
In his first full cross-country season, he was the top finisher for the Bears in each of their initial three meets. At the Golden Eagle Invitational on Saturday, he recorded his personal best of 36:.50.0 on the 8k course, finishing 124th out of 169 runners. He was among nine SJBK runners, both male and female, to achieve personal records.
Helfant is only the second men’s runner in the Bears’ Skyline Conference history to receive a weekly award, following Justin Russell, ’19, who was named Rookie of the Week during the 2017 season. Last year, Jennifer Sarji earned the league’s top rookie honor three times on the women’s side.

Scoring their second-straight shutout at home, Saturday, the Brooklyn College women’s soccer team rolled to a 4-0 non-conference win over the University of Valley Forge. BC improved to 2-4-1. For the Bulldogs, Sage Bernstein had three assists. Dionisia Payamps had two goals — her fifth in two games.
Brooklyn’s men’s cross-country team had a strong showing at Saturday’s Golden Eagle Invitational at Bethpage State Park. Brooklyn placed eighth overall out of 18 teams that scored for the 8k course.
Frank Ferrante finished first for Brooklyn and eighth overall out of 168 finishers with a time of 26:59.2. Aziz Sharifov followed Ferrante for the Bulldogs and 41st overall with a time of 29:37.7. Dexter Weiner closed out BC’s top-three with a time of 31:47.7, finishing 69th overall.
For the women, Daniella Gostev finished first for Brooklyn and 64th overall out of 162 finishers on the 5k course with a time of 25:34.3; Shirin Muratova crossed the finish line second for BC and 76th overall in 26:12.2; and Alex Whyte wrapped-up Brooklyn’s top-three finishers with a time of 27:53.1, good for 96th overall.

Pratt Institute’s women’s and men’s cross-country teams also had strong showings at the Golden Eagle Invitational. Led by Giovanna Lisa, the Cannoneer women finished in fifth-place overall and the was second Division III team behind the United States Merchant Marine Acadenmy. Division II teams took the top three spots in the team competition. Lisa covered the 5k course in 22:13 to finish 22nd overall and the sixth DIII finisher.
Reshine Villarama clocked-in at a personal-best 23:16 for Pratt in 37th overall, and Sarah Cawley, followed five positions behind in 23:31.
Justin Cai lowered his 8k best to 29:17 to lead the Cannoneer men in 35th place. Andrew Langpap posted 34:32 to cross second in 102nd place and Andrew Weiss closed 36:01 good for 119th overall.
