Goldman joins effort to increase domestic violence hotline budget
NATIONWIDE – U.S. REP. DAN Goldman (D-10) on Thursday joined 86 fellow members of Congress in requesting $30 million in new funding in this year’s budget for the National Domestic Violence Hotline, which provides access to services like shelter referrals and abuse information to victims of domestic violence.
The congressmembers wrote that the additional funding was necessary to deal with a 20% increase in call volume over the last year. Contacts have also more than doubled since before the coronavirus pandemic, according to the hotline, with a pre-pandemic average of 1,200 calls per day now up to 2,500 per day.
“I’m pushing for increased funding for this lifeline to ensure that anyone struggling can call 800-799-SAFE to get help,” Goldman posted on X. The hotline also provides text and chat options, as well as translation services and hearing-impaired accessibility services.
