ALASKA — During climate evacuation, two creatures find love and comfort with each other: A girl cuddles with her puppy on Friday, Aug. 16, 2024, in Mertarvik, Alaska. She and her family relocated from Newtok, some nine kilometers away and across a body of water from Mertarvik. Their former homestead and their dwellings have been almost destroyed by severe erosion.

The native coastal Village of Newtok, a federally recognized tribe of 350 Yupik Eskimos, sits on the Ninglick River on the Bering Sea.

ALASKA — Nature’s revenge: Charles Alexie stands along the coastal erosion that has eaten away at the riverbanks on Friday, Aug. 16, 2024, in Newtok, Alaska. The erosion and melting permafrost have essentially destroyed Newtok, with about 70 feet (21.34 meters) of land lost every year. Most of the residents began relocating their community about five years ago; the last 71 to do so will load their possessions onto boats to move to Mertarvik, across the Ninglick River from their longtime home. They will rejoin the 230 Newtok residents who began moving away in 2019, becoming one of the first Alaska Native villages to complete a large-scale relocation because of climate change.

The Associated Press reported that Newtok’s leaders began searching for a new townsite more than two decades ago and wound up ultimately swapping land with the federal government for a spot that sits nine miles (14.48 kilometers) away. Geologically, Mertarvik sits on the stable volcanic underpinnings of Nelson Island in the Bering Strait.

CAPITOL — Continuing the pitch for a Ukrainian solution: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, center, walks with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., left, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., as he arrives for a briefing with lawmakers about the war effort against Russia, at the Capitol in Washington, Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, and to bolster support for his nation’s resistance to Russia. Zelenskyy was also scheduled to meet with President Joe Biden, who has announced his administration will provide billions of dollars more in missiles, drones, ammunition and other supplies. Zelenskyy was also scheduled to meet with Vice President Kamala Harris, who has pledged to continue the U.S. military support to Ukraine if she wins the election. Zelenskyy’s government is striving to maintain good relationships with the United States regardless of who wins next month’s elections.

However, GOP nominee and former President Donald Trump was a naysayer, refusing to meet with Ukraine’s president, instead criticizing him and even claiming that the nation has no future. He also praised Putin’s aggression toward Ukraine.

RIO DE JANEIRO — Politics … here, there and everywhere: Indianarae Siqueira, a transgender woman running for city council, attends a rally led by state employees in Rio de Janeiro, Wednesday, Sep. 25, 2024. Three years ago, Siquiera visited Columbia University’s Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race, to participate in a dialogue with Rutgers University Professor of Portuguese Dr. Daniel da Silva, whose research has focused on Lus-Afro-Brazilian gender, sexuality and performance. Their talk was part of a mini-lecture series focused on “Travesti and Trans Latina Activism – From the Streets to the Screen,” which explored “the connections among social movements led by travesties, trans Latinas, and transgender and gender non-binary people across the Americas,” according to a Columbia University webpage on the event.

The municipal elections in Rio are being held on Oct. 6, during which voters will elect a mayor, vice mayor and 51 city council members.

LUXEMBOURG — Well protected by the official Popemobile: Pope Francis and Archbishop of Luxembourg, Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, right, tour Place de Metz in Luxembourg on the first day of Francis’s four-day visit to Luxembourg and Belgium, Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024. The pontiff’s goal is to reinvigorate and reinforce Catholicism in a part of Europe that was a stronghold of the faith. However, growing secularism, particularly enforced by laws in France, and disillusion among the faithful in the wake of abuse scandals, attendance at Europe’s magnificent cathedrals and churches has diminished. During his stay through the weekend, Pope Francis is expected to emphasize the importance of the Catholic Church’s history in Western Europe, particularly Luxembourg and Belgium.

Of the Benelux nations, however, the Netherlands has been historically Protestant but has leaned toward non-religious. And in Belgium, roughly a third of the population now identifies as non-religious.
