City partners with NY’s historic settlement houses to help immigrants adjust
SUNSET PARK/EAST NEW YORK — THE CITY ESTABLISHED A NEW PARTNERSHIP with historic settlement houses to help immigrants, the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) Commissioner Manuel Castro and the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City announced on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
New York City settlement houses have a long history of successfully integrating and including immigrant communities, and the government’s partnership with them will expand community support for recently arrived migrants by establishing Immigrant Support Centers that will provide an array of services to thousands of newly arrived migrants.
Participating organizations in Brooklyn will be the Center for Family Life in Sunset Park and the Cypress Hills Local Development Corp., serving East New York, Starrett City and other neighborhoods in the eastern part of the borough. The partnership will provide new arrivals with a variety of services, including increased access to case management, beginner-level English classes, access to a job developer and retention specialist, services for expectant and parenting immigrants, Site Safety Training, social services intake and screenings, and legal support and referrals.
The selected organizations in Brooklyn join the Henry Street Settlement on Manhattan’s Lower East Side and the Jacob Riis Settlement in Astoria, which have a unique history of serving immigrants at the neighborhood level for over a century.
