Sinkhole develops in Coney Island, 2nd this month in southern Brooklyn
CONEY ISLAND — RESIDENTS IN CONEY ISLAND EXPERIENCED AN UNEXPECTED disruption on West 28th Street due to a large sinkhole that emerged on Monday morning, News12 Brooklyn reported. The sinkhole, which was traced via rushing water to a ruptured pipe, forced local authorities to close the street to traffic for safety reasons. Crews arrived at the scene around 8:30 a.m. to assess the damage, while nearby residents expressed concerns about potential safety risks. As of press time Tuesday, he area remains cordoned off with caution tape, with no injuries reported as of press time Tuesday morning.
Just two weeks earlier, on Sept. 9, another sinkhole developed not too far away, at a busy intersection in Bath Beach, causing a vehicle to partially fall in. The vehicle’s owner and boyfriend tried in vain to push the car out, and she wound up having to rescue him as well. The cause of that sinkhole was a ruptured water main. Back in January, a sidewalk collapsed in Sunset Park.
