EAST RIVER — The Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, also known as the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, is closed on Wednesday morning, Sept. 25. Notify NYC sent out an alert shortly before 10 a.m. about a planned road closure as part of security measures surrounding the UN General Assembly taking place in Midtown Manhattan. The city is closing all lanes in both directions of the tunnel until noon on Wednesday.

Originally opened in 1950, the tunnel connects Hamilton Ave. in Red Hook/Gowanus with the southernmost tip of Manhattan also known as the Battery (an artillery reserve during the Dutch period). It was renamed in memory of Gov. Carey, a Democrat who served the Park Slope/Sunset Park area seven terms as a Congressmember before being elected to the state’s highest office. During his time as New York’s 51st governor, Carey was credited with rescuing the city from the 1970s fiscal crisis.
