Gov. Hochul advised to maintain distance from embattled NYC Mayor
ALBANY AND CITY HALL — Gov. Kathy Hochul’s close aides have been advising her to keep her distance from the embattled New York City Mayor Eric Adams, whose federal indictment was announced on Wednesday night.
According to a Spectrum New York 1 report on Wednesday, Hochul appeared to have cooled on the camaraderie that she and fellow Democrat Adams have enjoyed in the past.
Although Hochul has emphasized that she and Mayor Adams need to continue working together to govern, she has limited her public appearances with him.
Experts have warned that a time may come when Hochul, for the sake of her own re-election campaign, may have to choose between that and keeping Adams as an ally.
“I’m going to continue working with the mayor’s team and him to make sure we achieve our objectives, which is to improve the City of New York during this difficult time,” said Hochul during an event upstate.
The state constitution does empower the governor to remove Adams from office. She had considered using that power two years ago, but instead concerning Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, in accordance with Section 34 of the state Public Officers Law.
