BROWNSVILLE — A CEREMONIAL RIBBON-CUTTING was held in Brownsville Wednesday to celebrate completion of the Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center (GMDC) — the first new, mixed-use residential and industrial development in Brownsville. The $118 million project transformed the former Fox’s U-Bet Chocolate Syrup factory at Rockaway Avenue and Newport Street into the GMDC Brownsville Industrial Center, with 39,000 square feet of affordable, light industrial space on the ground-floor; Bridge Rockaway, a residential building with 174 units of affordable and supportive housing above the industrial space; and a 2,000 square-foot community space, spanning half a city block. The first residents will begin moving in next week.

GMDC, The Bridge and Mega Development are behind the project, along with Think! Architecture and Design. Sen. Roxanne Persaud, Assemblymember Latrice Walker, NYC Executive Director for Housing Leila Borzorg, representatives of nonprofits and other officials joined in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
