Schools Chancellor David Banks announces he’ll resign
NEW YORK CITY — NYC SCHOOLS CHANCELLOR WILL RESIGN FROM HIS POST at the end of the year, a source at City Hall confirmed to PIX11 on Tuesday afternoon, Sept. 24. David Banks, in a Sept. 24 letter to Mayor Eric Adams on the NYC Public Schools website, said he will resign after nearly 40 years in this school system. The resignation comes in the midst of a federal corruption investigation involving Banks and his brother, Philip Banks III. His announcement was made two weeks after federal authorities seized personal and professional phones and raided his apartment.
Mayor Adams handpicked Banks to lead the nation’s largest public school system. Sources told reporters that, just prior to his announcement, Banks had convened an emergency leadership meeting at the Department of Education headquarters at the Tweed Courthouse in Lower Manhattan.
Mayor Adams thanked Chancellor Banks for what he said were successful initiatives, such as “NYC Reads,” and “NYC Solves,” to improve students’ literacy and math performance, as well as universal dyslexia screenings.
