MANITOBA — Surviving among hard rocks, part of Canada’s ecosystem: A polar bear nurses her cub, Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2024, near Churchill, Manitoba. It is estimated that there are about 935 polar bears in the wild, concentrated around Churchill, Manitoba, in the Hudson Bay area. The best times for viewing are in October and November. Manitoba is a nexus for several types of ecosystems, from arboreal forest to tundra.

The Canadian province of Manitoba stretches northward from the U.S. border states of North Dakota and Minnesota to the province of Ontario to the east and south and the Hudson Bay to the north. Manitoba’s capital is Winnipeg, in the southeastern part of the province, near both the provincial line with Ontario and the U.S. border with Minnesota.

PORT-AU-PRINCE — A rocky path among the rubble: Pedestrians cross a puddle of water in downtown Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Monday, Sept. 23, 2024. This week, the Associated Press reported that several dozen families are asking the U.S. government to grant humanitarian parole to the Haitian children they’re adopting, many of whom had to be evacuated amid gang warfare. The families are fighting Haiti’s policy of requiring the adoption process to be completed in its capital, Port-au-Prince before the children can emigrate because the mandate places the children in direct harm.

A number of U.S. Senators are involved in a bipartisan effort to get the U.S. Department of State and Homeland Security Dept. to safeguard the adoptees’ passage; these include Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), Marco Rubio (R-Florida) and Tim Scott (R-South Carolina).

PHILADELPHIA — Slightly out of uniform, exulting: Philadelphia Phillies’ Bryce Harper celebrates after the Phillies won a baseball game against the Chicago Cubs to clinch the NL East title, Monday, Sept. 23, 2024, in Philadelphia. As the closing week of the regular season began on Monday, there are 15 teams remaining vying for their respective division titles.

The Oct. 25 date for the start of this year’s World Series is flexible, and it depends largely on how many games are needed in the League Championship series to clinch the pennant. For example, if all the American and National League teams can clinch their championships in three games, then the World Series will begin sooner.

PENNSYLVANIA — ‘Don’t make a fuss, just picking up a few things …’ Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump waves as he visits Sprankle’s Neighborhood Market in Kittanning, PA, Monday, Sept. 23, 2024. Store owner Ryan Sprangle was given a heads-up last week that he’d be getting a visit from a representative with the Trump campaign, but he figured it would be someone at the state or local level, reports TribLIVE.com, a news media company serving Pennsylvania’s southwestern counties. But it wasn’t until Monday that he learned the GOP nominee himself was the visitor.

Trump’s visit was also a mettle test for coordination between the Secret Service and local security detail, who were on particular alert as details unfolded about the man behind a second assassination attempt earlier this month.
