Domino Square development gets new public plaza
WILLIAMSBURG — THE NEW DOMINO SQUARE, A KEY PART OF THE LARGER DOMINO REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT by Two Trees Management, opened earlier this week. Situated on the site of the old Domino Sugar Refinery, this acre of public space provides Williamsburg residents with a new plaza designed for flexible programming, according to Two Trees Management and the website 6 sqftNYC.
Domino Square marks the final public portion of the master plan for the historic Domino Sugar Factory site, explains a spokesperson for Two Trees. Created in collaboration with SHoP Architects, Studio Cadena and Field Operations, the Domino master plan replaced a previous city-approved plan with a new proposal that repurposed an industrial site to increase connectivity to the Williamsburg waterfront and created a new street grid compatible with the existing neighborhood. The new plan provides for the mix of uses — creative office space, market-rate and affordable housing, neighborhood retail and community facilities. The plan also increases publicly accessible open space by 60%.
The park’s design includes an egg-shaped central plaza, an amphitheater seating with views of the East River and a green roof. The square will host events like farmers markets and ice skating in the winter. Domino Square is also getting a $10 million wastewater treatment facility underneath the park, which is set to be completed by 2025.
The original Domino Sugar Refinery in Williamsburg dates back to the mid-19th century and was founded by the Havemeyer family. A street in Williamsburg was later named after them.
