SUNY Downstate Health Sciences’ newly-named dean to serve in dual role
FLATBUSH — SUNY DOWNSTATE HEALTH SCIENCES UNIVERSITY HAS APPOINTED Dr. David J. Christini, a professor of Physiology & Pharmacology, as its new Dean of the School of Graduate Studies. Dr. Christini, who served as the SGS’s interim dean for the past two years and leads several critical initiatives while working closely with faculty and students, will continue his work in this capacity and as senior vice president for research as part of a dual appointment. Christini was selected from an outstanding group of finalists following a comprehensive two-year national search.
Dr. Christini’s dual appointment reflects the importance of research and graduate training typical at health sciences institutions. A full, tenured professor in the university’s Dept. of Physiology and Pharmacology, Dr. Christini has overseen SUNY Downstate’s broad research strategy and operations since joining Downstate in 2020. Before that, he served for six years on the senior leadership team at Weill Cornell Graduate School, with two of those years as Vice Dean. He also founded and led the NIH T32-funded tri-institutional doctoral program in Computational Biology and Medicine from 2003 to 2019.
Dr. Christini holds a doctoral degree in biomedical engineering from Boston University. He completed his postdoctoral fellowship at Cornell University Medical College.
