Pedestrian struck and killed on the BQE
BOROUGHWIDE — POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A FATAL COLLISION INVOLVING A VEHICLE AND A 46-YEAR-OLD MAN PEDESTRIAN on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE) early Saturday morning, Sept. 21, according to the Department of Transportation, reported PIX11 News.
The incident occurred around 5:25 a.m. near 86th Street, when police responded to a 911 call and found a 46-year-old man unconscious and unresponsive lying in the roadway, officials said. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man was walking on the highway when the driver of a 2012 Nissan Frontier hit him. The driver remained on the scene and no arrests had been made as of Monday morning.
The Department of Transportation has established a number of policies and street designs as part of its Vision Zero and Safer Streets initiatives, among them: Enhanced crossings, turn calmings, El-space (beneath elevated transportation structures, including MTA train lines). As it is illegal for pedestrians to access interstates, freeways and other limited-access roads, no safety policies are in place for them in such situations.
