CITYWIDE — A NEW SCHOLARSHIP HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED at the City University of New York in memory of a beloved anchor on Spectrum New York 1, State Attorney General Letitia James and CUNY Board of Trustees Chairperson William C. Thompson, Jr. today announced on Sunday, Sept. 22.

Ruschell Boone, who was an alumna of Baruch College, and an Emmy award-winning journalist died in September 2023 after a battle with pancreatic cancer.  James and the CUNY Board of Trustees established the Ruschell Boone Scholarship to defray the cost of tuition, fees and other college-related expenses for West Indian students pursuing degrees in journalism at CUNY. An initial endowment of $125,000 pledged by the CUNY Board of Trustees and University supporters supports the scholarship.

Boone, who immigrated from Kingston, Jamaica, at 11, found her calling while at Baruch, from an opportunity to fill a radio slot when another student missed the shift. Before starting at Spectrum News in 2002, she worked for CNBC and CNN. James pointed out in a statement that Boone was “beloved by New Yorkers for her thoughtful, informative reporting and focus on communities that were often ignored, marginalized or misrepresented.”

For donations to the Ruschell Boone Scholarship Fund, checks may be payable to the City University of New York and will be deposited in a separate account at the CUNY Endowment Fund for the purpose of funding the scholarships.
