One Staten Island-bound BQE lane closed this weekend to install WIM tech
DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN — One lane of the Staten Island-bound Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in Downtown Brooklyn will be open this weekend, Sept. 21-23, NYC DOT said. The Sands Street Entrance Ramp to the Staten Island-bound roadway will also be closed.
This is the second weekend closure to facilitate the installation of weigh-in-motion (WIM) equipment, which will help keep overweight trucks off the aging Triple Cantilever section of the highway. WIM technology installed seven months ago in the Queens-bound direction has been a success, leading to a 64% reduction in overweight vehicles along that stretch — from 7,777 overweight trucks to 2,769 — NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said in a statement.
“This implementation of WIM technology will extend the lifespan of the BQE Triple Cantilever,” Councilmember Lincoln Restler (D-33) noted.
Just one lane will remain open on the Staten Island-bound BQE from Adams Street to Washington Street from 1 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday. Travelers are advised to avoid the area.
