THAILAND — When the cute aggression hits: Two-month-old baby hippo Moo Deng plays with a zookeeper in the Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province, Thailand, Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024.
Moo Deng has become a global viral sensation since she made her debut on Facebook, thanks to the zoo staff. The female baby pygmy hippo’s image has been patented so that she can benefit financially from the extraordinary interest, which shows no sign of abating, the Associated Press reports. Humans have waited for hours until the zoo’s opening time to visit the pit where Moo Deng lives with her mom, Jona. The pink-cheeked baby animal’s movements have elicited cheers and cooing.
In one photo, a mother and daughter rhino were spotted eating a meal of squash, corn and lemongrass. Moo Deng’s own name is not quite so vegetarian: it means “bouncy pork.” In Thailand, Moo Deng is a kind of spicy meatball.
SPRINGFIELD — Making the best of a scary situation: Neighborhood kids gather to sell Kool-Aid and chips, Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024, in Springfield, Ohio. Some were kept home from school because of the bomb threats at their schools, and if that happens again, they plan to be at the corner with Kool-Aid and chips again the next day. When business was slow, they snacked on the merchandise, reports the Associated Press. Springfield’s adult population is coalescing to help the immigrants with basic needs, such as food. A bipartisan group of area mayors met with Springfield Mayor Rob Rue on Monday to strategize on how best to help — including with resources to address the traffic, health care, social services and housing needs.
David Graham, who has become known to Springfield’s residents as the Praying Cowboy, has offered spiritual and emotional support to the community.
MILAN — Fashion is … a bucket hat that you wear on your face: A model wears a creation as part of the Prada Spring Summer 2025 collection that was presented in Milan, Italy, Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024. The Italian billionaire designer and business leader Miuccia Prada has focused this collection on “finding humanity in an era when information overload is driven by algorithms. Instead of exploring themes on the runway, the designers created individual looks,” reports the Associated Press.
Other designers in this fashion week are also focusing on the individual look rather than on the collections themselves.
CZECH REPUBLIC — Nature’s revenge — no home is safe from natural disaster: A view of a damaged house after recent floods near Pisecna, Czech Republic, Thursday, Sept. 19, 2024. Much of the flooding was in the northeastern part of the Czech Republic. The mountain town of Písečná (Pioseczna in Polish), near the border with Poland, was particularly hard hit, reports The Weather Channel.
The record rains have been part of Storm Boris, a slow-moving, low-pressure system that has wielded five times the region’s average rainfall for September over a period of just four days.
COLOMBIA — If you’re a winner, raise your hand: Players of North Korea walk off the field after defeating the United States in a U-20 Women’s World Cup semifinal soccer match in Cali, Colombia, Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024. The U.S. Under-20 Women’s Youth National Team lost to Korea and thus missed out on the chance for a gold or silver medal.
But the Americans are still in contention for bronze when they play against the team that loses the Japan-Netherlands semifinal in the Third-Place Match, according to a Sept. 29 article on the Soccer Forward Foundation’s website. That match takes place on Saturday, Sept. 21.
DR CONGO — Whether it be war, famine or disease, children are the most vulnerable of us all: Emile Miango, 2, who has mpox, lies in the hospital on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024, in Kamituga, South Kivu province, which is the epicenter of the world’s latest outbreak of the disease in eastern Congo. The epidemic is disproportionately affecting women and girls, who have already been displaced by the region’s political conflict, reports Care, a global humanitarian organization. People who have had to flee warfare and wound up at Internally Displaced Persons camps, where the lack of sanitary conditions breeds the spread of infection, have also been susceptible.
Care estimates that 700 deaths have resulted from the more than 15,000 mpox infections.
WASHINGTON — Pantsuit powerhouse: Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris arrives to speak at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute (CHCI) leadership conference Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024, in Washington. Harris warned the gathering that, if Trump again wins the White House, he will initiate “massive raids, massive detention camps” and mass deportations. Harris also denounced her opponent’s other immigration proposals.
Speaking on a positive note as well, Harris said the United States is capable of achieving both a pathway to citizenship and border security.
MEXICO — To grieve is to never forget: Relatives of the 43 Ayotzinapa students who went missing almost 10 years ago march to demand justice for their loved ones in Chilpancingo, Mexico, Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2024. The anniversary of the attack comes up on Sept. 26. In 2014, municipal police attacked a group of students and then handed them over to a local drug gang that allegedly killed them and burned their bodies. The remains of only three of the abductees were identified, according to the Associated Press.
A truth commission eventually concluded that federal authorities on the local, state and national levels had colluded with the gang, calling the murders a “state crime.”
