Teamsters forego endorsing either Presidential candidate
NATIONWIDE — NEITHER PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE is receiving an endorsement from The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which on Wednesday, Sept. 18, declined to endorse Kamala Harris or Donald Trump for president, the Associated Press reports.
The Teamsters stated that neither candidate had sufficient support from the 1.3 million-member union, whose Local U No. 814 has an office on Montague St. in Brooklyn Heights, according to its website.
“Unfortunately, neither major candidate was able to make serious commitments to our union to ensure the interests of working people are always put before Big Business,” Teamsters President Sean M. O’Brien said. “We sought commitments from both Trump and Harris not to interfere in critical union campaigns or core Teamsters industries — and to honor our members’ right to strike — but were unable to secure those pledges.”
Trump and Harris have each separately met with panels of Teamsters. The union’s internal polling has favored the former President over the Democratic candidate.
Other major trade unions such as the AFL-CIO, the American Federation of Teachers and the United Auto Workers have already chosen to support Vice President and Democratic Presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
