Perelandra to close, shocking Brooklyn Heights residents
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — THE IMMINENT CLOSING THIS WEEK OF PERELANDRA, a popular health food store at 175 Remsen St., has Brooklyn Heights residents shocked and fuming. The store, which stocked vitamins, organic produce, bulk nuts and a juice bar with health-focused vegetarian sandwiches, will close after Sunday, Sept. 29, although its website does not yet mention this.
One Montague Street resident told the Brooklyn Eagle she learned from a store manager that Perelandra “never fully recovered after the pandemic, they are not moving to another location and their last day open is on Sunday.”
Upon learning of the closure, resident Cara Sadownick told the Eagle, “That would be devastating. There’s no place else like it nearby.”
Another resident who has lived in the Heights since the 1970s noticed that Perelandra’s inventory seemed low lately.
The news went viral on the Brooklyn Heights Blog. One commenter named Banet wrote about a conversation with a cashier who said that although Perelandra did not lose its lease, its rent went up considerably, making it unprofitable to stay open.
The cashier had pointed out that St. Francis College’s move from Remsen Street to Livingston Street contributed to lost revenue, as the faculty and staff were regular customers.
Heights resident Andrew Porter wrote on BHB that while Perelandra’s “prices have always been high, the selection has always been outstanding.”
Perelandra’s very first store opened on April 17, 1976, at 154 Montague St. according to its Facebook page.
