BROWNSVILLE —THE NY CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION IS DENOUNCING the NYPD’s handling of a subway shooting last Sunday, in which innocent bystanders were wounded, one of whom suffered brain damage. NYCLU Executive Director Donna Lieberman issued a statement on Wednesday, criticizing the officers’ actions and calling for better accountability on the part of Mayor Eric Adams’ administration and the NYPD.

“The NYPD’s odd accounting of events in the last two days — including incorrectly reporting that a knife had been recovered, only to later claim it was stolen — raises more questions than answers. The City must promptly release any body camera and subway platform footage from the incident,” the statement said. “New Yorkers shouldn’t be left to take the NYPD’s word for it. Yesterday, the Mayor praised the NYPD’s ‘restraint’ in shooting four people, including a bystander who has suffered brain damage. It seems Mayor Adams is more comfortable with New Yorkers taking a bullet than second-guessing his NYPD. No reflection from an administration that time and again demands no accountability — No surprise.”

City Councilmembers Chris Banks and Sandy Nurse, both of whom represent parts of Brownsville, have also called for release of all body camera and surveillance camera footage of the incident.

One of the victims, 49-year-old Gregory Delpeche, was on his way to work from Canarsie when a stray bullet from one of the officers’ guns hit his head. As of Wednesday, he was still reported unconscious and in intensive care.
