Police showdown with fare-beater injures four, leaving a passenger in critical condition
BROWNSVILLE — AN NYPD OFFICER AND THREE OTHERS WERE SHOT at the Sutter Ave. L subway station Sunday afternoon, Sept. 15 as the result of a showdown between police and a fare-beater who walked through an open gate. The police officers, who were on transit duty at the station, confronted and then shot at the fare-beater when he threatened them. He boarded a northbound L train that had just entered the station and the NYPD were able to board also before the doors shut, according to a transcript of a press conference with Mayor Eric Adams, MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber, Interim Police Commissioner Thomas Donlon and NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey.
The perpetrator wielded a knife and returned to the station platform, the police following suit. They opened fire and bullets hit another officer, two commuters and the suspect, according to several news sources. At least one of the commuters, a 49-year-old man, was in critical condition at Brookdale Hospital after being struck in the head, NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey told reporters at a press conference.
Mayor Adams said during the press conference that the farebeater had a rap sheet with 20 prior arrests.
