Mayor Adams’ chief legal council Zornberg abruptly resigns
CITYWIDE — CITY HALL’S TOP attorney abruptly resigned Saturday, the latest development in the firestorm that has left the Adams’ administration reeling while top officials face numerous federal and criminal investigations, Politico and other sources reported over the weekend.
The mayor announced the departure of Chief Counsel Lisa Zornberg late Saturday night with no explanation, just her brief statement saying that she had concluded that she could no longer effectively serve in her position. In addition to serving as both Adams’ and City Hall’s counsel, Zornberg oversaw 10 city agencies. She left after a little over a year on the job, just days after the resignation of Police Commissioner Edward Caban.
Federal investigators have seized cell phones belonging to Caban and his brother James, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Philip Banks III, his brother Schools Chancellor David Banks, the chancellor’s girlfriend and First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright, and top police officials, THE CITY reported.
